Big Bad Tones was commissioned in 2010 by The Arts Council of Ireland for the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra as part of the Nine Composers series and won the Music Network Recording Award 2011.

The piece is dedicated to the memory of the great big band composer, trumpeter and bandleader Thad Jones (1923 - 1986).
